Royals fans remember Paul Splittorff

The Kansas City Royals organization mourns the passing of our all-time winningest pitcher and longtime team broadcaster, Paul Splittorff, at the age of 64 due to complications from melanoma. We invite our fans to share their memories and sentiments here in the comments below.

Splittorff spent his entire 15-year Major League Baseball career with the Royals and had a 166-143 record and 3.81 ERA in 429 regular-season games. The left-hander was in four postseasons with the Royals, 1976-77-78 and 1980, reaching the World Series in the latter year.

“Paul was a lifer as a Kansas City Royal, first as a stalwart on the field who became the winningest pitcher in franchise history and then transforming himself into an outstanding broadcaster,” Royals owner and CEO David Glass said. “We will not only miss the insight and humor that he injected into every telecast, but most importantly we will miss his friendship.  He epitomized class and was always a great ambassador for the Kansas City Royals.”

Please feel free to leave your comments below to share your own memories and any condolences as we remember No. 34.

prayers and thoughts go out to Splitt’s family. i watched Splitt pitch many times in texas as a teenager, you were awesome. Rest in peace! Royals fan who had to grow up in texas.

  23. Jami Bale

Condolences to the Splittorff family, and to the KC Royals organization and fans. I have many fond memories of those glorious days and the great Royals teams of his era. He will be missed.

  24. John Garrett

Been a Royals fan since 69 and Splitt has always been one of my all time favorite players. I’ll never forget the countless memories of Paul as a player and a broadcaster. The Royals Family just lost a great one. Rest in Peace Splitt, you will be missed.

  25. Cheryl DeShon

I have been a Royals fan since they came to town in 1969. Paul Splittorff was always one of my favorite pitchers. He will be missed. RIP, Paul …

  26. Kathy Jackson

When I was growing up in Milwaukee, I would alwayw remember those pesky Royals coming to town and always beating the Brewers! My favorite memory of Mr Splittorff, the broadcaster, was when they were promoting he bobblehead day give away and they put “little Splitty” on a treadmill in one of the gags. Paul and Ryan had a great laugh about little Splitty exercising on that treadmill. I will miss his great sense of humor in the broadcast booth.

  27. Kyle

I did not see Mr. Splittorff play but I have been a royals fan since i was born. I live in St. Peters and watch every royals game and the post game with Paul and it is sad to lose a familiar voice and face for me to see daily. This man lived and truely loved Royals baseball and the the great city of Kansas City. Royals nation lost an Icon, Legend, and a true ambassador or Royals baseball. The world was a better place with this great man in it.

  28. Linda Curran

One event the Royals used to do back in the 1970s was players would be on the field and you could go down and get your picture taken with them. I still have the picture of me taken with Paul Splitorff. It will truly be a cherished photo.

  29. Phil Young

Splitt was my team’s coach at the first Royals Dream Week, and I came to know him even better when my radio station carried the Royals games. He was a damn good guy and one friendly, witty fellow.

    Phil Young

  30. Jerry Windsor

Splitt was the number 1 all-time royal. Frank White is number 2 and George Brett is No. 3. Number 1 is in heaven.

  31. Chad Moller

So very saddened to hear about the loss of such a great man. As a child of the 70s, I grew up in the glory days, and Splitt was definitely one of my favorites. Never imagined while I was growing up that I would have the chance to meet and work with him, but as fate would have it, my career path (media relations in Mizzou Athletics) crossed with Splitt’s broadcasting career. He was one of the first “big-time” athletes I ever met, and he was just a regular guy – you’d never know of his celebrity because he never acted like one. Just the most down-to-earth man and among the most genuinely nice and warm people I’ve ever met. I treasure the memory of having a chance to play a round of golf with him some 7-8 years ago, and I had a blast playing with him, even though he kicked my tail all over the course.

My prayers go out to the Splittorff family and to the entire Royals family. We lost a great person, but we were definitely better off for having him with us for too short of a time.

    Grace & Peace,
    Chad Moller
    Mizzou Athletics

  32. Brian Bauerly

R.I.P. Splitt. Sioux City Iowa will always claim you as one of ours. (Morningside College) A class act on and off the field!!!
    He will be be missed.

  33. Tina Wilkerson

I will certainly miss Paul and his insight and details as he called the game. We watch every Royals games and we always enjoyed Splitts analysis and ability to make it all sound so easy. I grew up watching Splitt pitch and was always amazed how with that high leg kick he didn’t get tired after 2 innings! He and his wife used to bowl with my mother and father in law and they always enjoyed talking the game with him. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

  34. Mark Obanion

Been Royals fan since they started and he was one of my favorites of all time. We sure could use you now, Paul. RIP.

    • Noreen Clark

Me too. SOOOOOO sad. He will be 1,000,000% missed. I had a chance to get his autograph last year at one of the home games and chickened out ’cause I didn’t think I should bother him. How silly……..I’m sure he would have obliged. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

  35. Kevin

Like many younger fans, I only remember Paul as a broadcaster, not as a player. I grew up watching the Royals on TV and enjoyed listening to Paul night after night on the broadcasts. I feel as if I have lost a member of my family, as his voice was always in my home during baseball season.

God bless you, Paul. You were the best.

  36. Ron

My thoughts and prayers to his family and the Royals organization. Splitt was a Royal Pro as a player and broadcaster! A true blue person that will be missed!

  37. Tammy Shepherd

Paul had a sweet disposition and all of us Royals fans will miss him. Peace and good memories to his family. Paul, have a great time on the other side 🙂

  38. Wes Cromer

Paul Splittorff was one of the many Royals I remember so well growing up…one of my favorite pitchers. I gained even more respect for Splitt in the broadcast booth…he had incredible insight of the game of baseball. I’m going to miss him in the booth.

  39. Brant Haskey

Paul Splittorff’s was the first autograph I ever got. I was 7-8ish, late 70’s, at Phil Welch Stadium in St Joseph, MO. He signed a ball for me and I have never forgotten that night. I still have the ball, with more Royals great autographs, and have handed it down to my 9 yro son. I have educated him on the great Royals of my childhood and he has come to appreciate them as I did. Everytime we saw Splitt at the K or Fan Fest I would always point him out. I ran into Splitt last year at the K after he had returned from being out battling cancer. I shook his hand and told him how great it was to see him back. At Fan Fest ’10, I got his autograph again and told him about him being the first one I ever got when I was a kid. I will miss seeing him at the K and on the post-games. He was truely a Royal and did so much for the team and town. There are very few like Splitt in the game today. I’m glad I have gotten to meet him over the years and seen him play in his hayday. RIP Splitt!

  40. Joelle Joyce

I grew up in Blue Springs & played softball with his daughter. During the strike year he came to a lot of games. I got some hitting advice from him and he signed my glove; something I will never forget. He was a very kind man and he will be missed.

  41. Bob Lewis

One of the great men of baseball! Always very classy and well rounded individual. Never BIG ME and little you. Paul, you will be greatly missed in and out of baseball. Our prayers are with your family.

  42. Sharon H

May you rest in peace Splitt-you brought us such joy as a player and an announcer. Prayers for you and your family.

  43. Jay L Kent

R.I.P. PAUL. YOU WERE A GREAT PITCHER AND A CLASS ACT. GOING TO MISS YOUR BROADCASTS BADLY !!

  44. gerry

I have followed the Royals since the 70’s. I remember the big 3 of Splitt, Gura and Leonard in the Royals glory years. Rest in peace Paul.

  45. Jim Faranda

Good man, good pitcher. As a Yankee fan, I remember my team being on the losing end of some very well pitched games by Paul Splittorff.

I recall Reggie Jackson getting benched at times when he pitched.

The Splittorff family, and all of baseball, have suffered a big loss.

  46. Scott Jones

Rest in Peace Paul Splittorf…many of summer nights were spent watching or listening as you pitched the Royals to a victory.

  47. Charlemagne

Paul always exuded class … all the way ’til the end. So now the Kiester at WHB will be happy since he no longer has to tolerate Paul’s “unacceptable speech impediment” … what a D-bag!

  48. Gabe

We will all miss Split. Royals broadcasts won’t be quite the same now. Paul handled his illness with courage and humility and we can all only hope to be as graceful in our time of need.

  49. Tom Stull

I feel as though a member of my family has passed. So sorry for Splitt’s wife and children, but thank you for sharing him with us. I got to watch him play and enjoyed his, and the Royal’s success, and I really enjoyed his as a Royal’s broadcaster. All of us lifelong Royal’s fans are saddened today, but I can’t help but smile at his great sence of humor. He meant a lot not just to KC but to the entire midwest and will be truly missed.

  50. Leisa Grossman

I have many memories of watching Paul bringing it on the mound as a young girl. He was one of the few Royals pitching greats. And I have recent memories of watching him in the pre-game show at Rival’s Sports Bar at Kauffman. The most recent time was 5/6/11. I had no idea that day that he would be gone 19 days later. Rest in peace. You will be sadly missed.

  51. Cathy Jackson

What a pitcher he was– awesome to watch! Such a style and delivery! We miss you– thanks for the memories! RIP Splitt

  52. rick smith

What a great player he was for the Royals and so enjoyable to listen to him on the broadcast team. He will be missed.
    God bless you Paul.

  53. Jim Pendarvis

So many memories of a true gentleman who happened to play baseball for my favorite team. Yes, he was a great pitcher and holds some major Royals team records, but his love and respect for the game surpass those things. I had the chance to meet him several times… he’d sign some baseball cards and talk baseball with those of us fans who surrounded him. It didn’t get any better than that! I also enjoyed him in his distinguished broadcasting career… his memories, his insights, his frank opinions, his conversations with fellow broadcasters in the booth — all added so much to my enjoyment of the games he was doing regardless of what sport/season. The sports world has lost a great role model.. the world has lost a great human being. Thank you, Paul.

  54. Sharman Cook

Paul Splittorff – a true competitor and gentleman. What a sad day for Royals baseball fans. My deepest sympathies to his family, friends, co-workers, and the Royals organization.

  57. Gary Nelson

I grew up less than 4 miles from Roylas Stadium and me and my brother use to ride our bikes to almost all the games for the $2.00 GA seats. Split was a huge influence on my pitching style and he is a very classy act. we are going to miss the comentary but more importantly the man. Rest in peace Splitt

  58. Cyndy Mallon-O'Connor

I am deeply sadden by the passing of Paul. My prayers go out to his wife, kids & mother. Paul will always be in my heart. I really enjoyed the way he broadcasted the games & he was such a wonderful man. I listened to him call the Royals games & Big 12 games. He will be deeply missed. Godspeed Paul.

  59. Dave Luce

Split, we’re gonna miss you. Smart, cool and the definition of a class act. Won’t be the same without him.

  60. Rhonda Palmer

I grew up watching the Royals and Paul Splitorff. I am still watching the Royals now and will continue to watch them always. Paul was a wonderful pitcher as well as a commentator. He will be missed and his family is in our prayers.

  61. Darryl Hale

I remember my first time I went to Royals Stadium as a kid. Paul pitched the game that day and didn’t win the game. I watched as he stood on the mound after the game disappointed. After awhile he headed to the dugout, saw me standing there and threw me the ball with a big smile. Many years later I got him to sign it and thanked him for making me a Royal’s fan. I still have that ball in my collection and every time I see it, it makes me smile. Thanks for the great memory Splitt. You will be greatly missed!

  62. Kevin Prusia

Splitt was one of my childhood heroes along with the rest of the Royals in the mid to late 70’s. So many memories of straining to hear their games on far-away and scratchy AM radio. Can still see your windup and leg kick. Rest well, Paul.

  63. Chris

You brought enjoyment to baseball through your playing and your broadcasting. I had the opportunity to know you and your family on and off the field. Prayers to all of your family.

  64. Mike Romanelli

Being a Yankee Fan, I recall the era when the Yanks and Royals would play in the playoffs. Always hated when they had to face Paul Splittorff. A great pitcher and a great competitor. RIP.

  65. Bob Biggs

Having been a Royals fan since their first game in 1969 and being in the same age bracket as Splitt I have a lot of fond memories of him both as a player and broadcaster. He was always the consummate professional and had the heart of a lion. Thanks, Splitt, for the wonderful memories…

  70. Mike Beatty

God bless Paul and his family. In all my years as a Blue Springs resident, I’ve never heard anything but positive things about him and his family. Truly a down-to-earth guy. Unfortunately, this is another reminder that we should all live life to the fullest and make every day count.

  72. Paul Danaher

Having grown up listening to the Royals since their first game when they beat the Minnesota Twins, when Paul Splittorff joined the Royals, he brought and left a legacy of the rare combination of great pitching, humility, class and sense of humor. What an inspiration for all of us. You were a class act til the end. God bless you and your family, Split. May you rest in peace.

  73. Paul Thurston

So sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. I grew up in KC during the 70’s and 80’s and spent many summer days listening to the Royals on radio, or waiting in line for General Admission tickets on sweltering July afternoons. I’ll always remember trying to emulate Splittorff’s high leg kick and delivery (even though I wasn’t left handed!). He was one of the first Royal celebrities I’ll ever remember–before George Brett, Dennis Leonard, Willie Wilson and Bo Jackson. May his family treasure his memory and the Royal nation honor his steady, consistent, and selfless contribution to it’s storied history.

  74. Larry Sanders

Splitt was always Classy. Whether he was pitching, announcing or talking to royal fans. You don’t replace guys like that. RIP Lefty

  81. C. O'Dell

You will be missed. You were a hero to many and it is well deserved. The void you left can never be filled. Rest well, my friend.

  82. Woody Grantham

My daughter, wife and I were at Fan Fest a couple of years ago. Paul was signing autographs and my wife happened to be in his line and got his autograph. Not being the biggest baseball fan in the world, she wasn’t aware of his baseball and broadcasting exploits. However, she was still excited about her encounter. “I just met the nicest man. His eyes radiated kindness.” I can only wish that we all were able to make such an impression in a few seconds.

  83. Dick & Jan Evenson

A class act!!!!! He will be missed. We have been Royals fans since they came to KC. We are from NE Iowa

  84. Mike Martin

Splitt, you were a true Royal! One of the best representatives of my hometown team and a class act all the way. Everyone who crossed your path was better for it. May God hold you and keep you.

  85. Shane England

    Splitt,

You were a warrior for the Royal blue through and through. You were there from the beginning all the way until you couldn’t go anymore. I will remember those glasses, your stern compassion, your partiality when calling games, that distinct voice, and the knowledge you shared through the years. I now know how to throw a professional knuckleball when my children want to play catch, thanks to you. The moral and expertise standard has been reset by you, and fellow players and sports media can only hope to come close to the legacy you have left. We love you Splitt. Thanks for all the years.

  86. Lisa Rice

Paul, thank you for making baseball very enjoyable!! You are a true sportsman and the Royals and Kansas City will miss you tremendously!!

I have enjoyed watching Splitt since the first time he ever pitched in a Royals uniform and later in the booth and at basketball games . He was always so laid back and made no negetative remarks about anything, not even umpires or referee’s when he sure could of. Thoughts and prayers to his family to help them thru these super sad days. Keep all memories in your heart and mind and God will get thur it all.

  95. Jack Mudd

I have been a Royals fan for over 40 years and I am saden by the passing of paul.He was great pitcher and goes to show that you don’t have throw 100 mile an hour fast ball.

  96. Nick

Split is, was and will always be what every Kansas City Royal should aspire to be. As a player and a broadcaster Split brought his “A” game every night. Split, you’ll be greatly, greatly missed.

  97. Pat Hayden

First of all and foremost is that my prayers are with Paul’s family and the Kansas City Royals today and the coming weeks. I got to meet Paul Splitorff right after he started with the Royals at an autograph session the Royals had and he was very kind to me as a kid. He seemed such a gentle soul. It is very sad to loose this kind of spirit at his age and he will be missed. I enjoyed watching him pitch and listen to his commentary when he became a broadcaster for the Royals. He was my favorite pitcher.

  98. Bev Carlson

So sad to lose such a class act. My condolences to Paul’s family and friends. I’m grateful he was such a wonderful presence in our city.

  99. Sandra Covell

You and Dick Howser have a lot to catch up on, not to mention Dan Quissenberry. All class!

  100. David Gordon

My mother and I saw Splitt pitch a one-hit shutout against
the Oakland A’s in 1975. Godspeed, Splitt and be sure to
pitch Babe Ruth away when you go up against him!

  101. Ron Garcia

Wally Bunker, Bill Butler, Dennis Leonard, Dick Drago, the early Royals that defined our franchise…RIP Splitt…

  102. Jaime Diaz

Gosh, can’t believe this 3 weeks ago you looked fine on FSN KC. I’ll never forget the day that we were both in the same elevator at the K…RIP Paul Splittorff.!

  103. Kim

I remember watching you pitch when I was a teenager and for the people that never had a chance to watch you pitch it is to bad! You were great Splitt, RIP!!!!!!!!!!!! Prayers out to the family!!!!!!!!!!!

  104. Ed Rowe

Well done rest in peace. Condolences to his family and friends. If there’s a Field of Dreams I hope they have a roster spot for this left-hander and he and Moonlight Graham get to be friends.

  105. Kristen

One of the true greats. I was thrilled to meet paul last summer at the K and get his autograph. My Thoughts and Prayers are with his Family May God Bless you threw these hardtimes May he rest in Peace.

  106. Larry Hare

As a life long royals fan I am deeply saddened today. I remember Spiltts accomplishments on the field and in the press box, as he excelled in both places. Tons of fond memories of the Royals revolve around Paul Spilttorff. The Splitorff family is in my thoughts and prayers.

  107. Touchdown Tommy D

Selfishly, I hate the fact that I’m not going to be able to hear you’re incredible insightfulness moving forward. To me, you’re the best TV color man in Royals history, you carried the show with Bob, and you and Ryan were a great fit. This is such a tragedy and tou will be greatly missed, but I will think of you everytime I turn on the Royals broadcast. Your spirit is alive and well!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Paul Splittorff. God bless.

  108. Carol Reilly

We’ve been Royals fans since we moved to the area in the early 1970s. Saw Paul pitch many, many times. Have enjoyed his TV broadcasts in later years. We will all miss him.
    Rest in Peace, Paul

  109. Danny

Our prayers go out to his family. Hopefully he knew Christ as his Saviour. Sad day for our Royals family. Play hard boys…for Splitt!

  110. Christopher Wilson

Paul Spilttorff was a class act on and off the ball field, and I hope he realized how much Kansas City loved him.

I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s, so I don’t remember a lot about his days as a pitcher. But, he will always be one of my favorites because of his humility, respect for others, and professionalism as a broadcaster. I can’t ever recall hearing him make a negative statement about someone else. He was relentlessly positive about the Royals and the organization. His time here was way too short…

I have enjoyed reading through everyone’s thoughts and memories about Mr. Splittorff. Thank you for sharing!

My family will continue to pray for the Splittorff family as they grieve the loss of a great man.

  111. J Jack

I’ve been a Royals fan since those great early 70’s teams. The highlight of my baseball life was going to the first “Batting Practice at the K” and getting into the cage with Splitt on the mound. Even though he must have been almost 60 years old then, it was intimidating to have this large man throwing at me from the left side! He was truly a class act, and baseball, particularly fans of the Royals, will miss him.

  112. Bryan Rhodes

Fond memories watching Splitt pitch many times over the years. Will never forget the playoff wins against Yankees. A real Royals treasure. He will be missed.

  113. Scott

As a Royals fan from the days of 22nd and Brooklyn in 1969, Split was one of the stars of the early Royals, along with Lou Piniella, Amos Otis and Fred Patek. Another piece of my childhood gone with him.

    RIP, Split

  114. Joyce Volmut

I am so sorry to hear “Split” I’ve been a Royals fan forever. He was a great pitcher. I will especially miss his keen insight into the game and the sense of humor he shared with his fellow broadcasters and audience. His sly remarks always made me laugh.

  115. Joan & Veronon South

I and my husband saw Paul pitch many times. He was great.
I have only two bobbleheads, one of George and one of Paul. so glad that I do. I will always cherish the memory of Paul. He was a great baseball player and broadcaster.

  116. Eugene R

I’ll always remember the playoff games against the Yankees. You were known as the Yankee killer. You’ll be missed.

  117. Scott Washam

I am gonna miss You Splitt….Alot!….another part of My youth is gone with You….I was a Big Fan….and this is a Sad day for Me…My prayers to the whole Splittorf family…I am sure they are heartbroken at the moment….May God lend You His comfort at this tough time…..We have good memories of Him anyways…and that is where I am going to focus…’The Gentle Giant’…

  118. Kelly Dyche

We made one trip a season to see the Royals.Splitt was always pitching when we went.He became my favorite Royals pitcher and soon my favorite Royal period.I am saddened by the news of his passing. He will be missed. And the organization needs to retire his number.Should’ve been done a long time ago.RIP Splitt.

  119. Tom E.

    Memory:
Back when we were kids, during some serious back yard wiffle ball games we used to try to mimic many of the major league pitcher’s wind-ups and sometimes we’d play “Name That Pitcher?”. There were so many memorable distinct pitching styles back then, such as Luis Tiant and his 180 degree twist, Mark “The Bird” Fydrich talking to the ball, Al Hrabosky “The Mad Hungarian” stepping to the back of the mound and then slamming the ball into his glove only to then serve up a fat meat ball, but truly everyone always new the crafty lefty “Split”, with his super high leg kick and then his arms and legs all in sync and then the squared away follow through. All business on the mound and “The Yankee Killer”.

Split, you were all class and you will be deeply missed.

  120. Sportsfan

Thank you for your dedication to this community and to the Royals. Thank you for all the memories and thank you for being a perfect person to represent Kansas City.

  121. Mike Wuerth

I’ve been following Paul since his earliest days in the Royals organization, and can’t remember a classier gentleman in the game of baseball. Heaven has gained a wonderful soul. RIP Splitt!

  122. kevin atkins

We know who is pitching in heaven today. God could not of chosen a better person then “Splitty” to be on his team.

  123. Carl Goetz

As a kid, I tried to emulate Splitt’s high leg-kick, even though I was right-handed. Looking back, there aren’t very many people more worthy of being imitated. I’ll miss you, Splitt.

  124. Darren Heeke

He was truely a class act. He was the working class of baseball. He wasn’t blessed with a 100 mph fastball, or a curve ball that “falls off the table” but he knew how to use what he had, and made himself the best pitcher in Royals history. He was also one of the few people who played their entire career with the Royals, and followed that, taking the same hard work ethic to the booth. People like Splittorff, George Brett, and Frank White don’t come around very often. Also, how many other Royals pitchers can be nicknamed the “Yankee Killer”?? His records will probably never be broken. He will be GREATLY missed. Rest in peace Mr. Splittorff…

  125. Jacob

I’m 29 so I just missed watching Splitt play but he was the voice of the Royals on TV for me growing up. He will be greathly missed. RIP Splitt

  126. brenda

My thoughts and prayers are with the family as well as the team.
He was a remarkable person and I enjoyed watching him on the field and the input he gave during the games on tv.
I hope his number will be considered for retirement.
    God Bless

  127. Andrew

Splitt, never got to see you pitch (I was born in 1990), but I did get to hear your passion for the game in your broadcasting. We lost a legend today. RIP.

  128. Howard Houk

I have been a Royals fan since 1969 and he was one if the best. A great competitor, and an even better person. He will be missed. God bless you Paul.

  129. Thomas A Webb

so sad ,one of the Royals GREATS! I’m blessed to have got to watch him pitch.. I lived at the K from the 70’s to 86 seen a lot of great baseball games in that era & splitt was a huge part of it! ..one of my child hood hero’s from my home town of Blue Springs.

  130. Phil Pauls

You will be missed Splitt! Loved listening to you on the games and seeing old footage of your pitching days. Was a great pleasure to meet you on the couple occasions I did.

My prayers and condolences go out to the whole Splittorff Family and Friends.

    Rest in Peace Splitt.

  131. Carlos Guerrero

My condolensces to the Splittorff family. Rest In Peace Paul Splittorff. Thank you for teaching me about baseball. Royals fans will always remenber you!!

  132. Splitt Fan

Condolences to the family. He didn’t know it but,he was a big part of my daily routine in high school(late 70’s).I had a transistor radio(remember those)and would listen to Paul,George and the gang whenever I was home before going to bed.He was my fav pitcher from that era.Class.

  133. Manuel Blancarte

We have lost a Great Person. A True ambassador of professional sports. Thanks Paul for all the great times watching you pitch and your broadcasting skills. Our sincere sympathy to the Splittorff family.

  134. Jenifer Phillips

Splitty, Although I don’t remember your playing years all that well, I have always been a fan. I am a born and raised KC Royals fan and you have always been a positive face and icon for the Royals and Kansas City. I’ve enjoyed watching you now on Fox Sports KC. You will be missed dearly but you will never be forgotten. God Bless and RIP.

  135. Betsey Jung Owens

Tears have continued to flow since hearing of Splitt’s death and in reading the tributes by his many many fans. To be heaven, it will have to have baseball, and I will be watching him pitch once again. He was a great person and Kansas City will mourn him. My prayers are with his family, friends, co-workers and fans.

  136. Roy

I have been a KC fan for 53 years – first the A’s, then the Royals. Splitt was always a favorite of mine. We were the same age and both played small college ball. I have always enjoyed him as an announcer as well. Felt bad for him this year; one could tell he wasn’t well. If there is any positive in his passing, it is that he didn’t have to suffer more.

  137. Frank Lambert

Paul gave us many thrills as a Royal, always in an understated manner. He applied the same manner to his broadcast comments both for baseball and basketball.

I really respected him and I will miss him.

  138. Brent

When I was in 8th grade the Royals Caravan came through Fort Scott while I was in school so I was unable to attend. My dad took off from work that day and went down there to get autographs for me. While he was there, Splitt got into a conversation with him. As my dad tells the story, they spoke for several minutes and Splitt was talking to him just like they had been friends for many years. From this story and from so many other stories I’ve heard today, this is typical how kind of a person Paul Splittorff was. The Royals broadcasts will not be the same without Splitt and Royals nation in general will not be the same. The family is in my thoughts and prayers. That’s a great father/husband you had there.

  139. Matt Whalen

Thanks for all the great calls Splitt. I wish I could have been around to watch you pitch too. You still reign supreme in the wins column.

  140. matthew everett

Thanks for all you have done for the Royals, KC, and me! I will always remember the man that came into my house 140 plus days a year, but I never got to meet.,I tip my glass to a good friend!

  141. Eric

I grew up listening to Split and the Royals on the radio in Western Kansas… Fond memories of Split and the Boys in Blue… RIP Split, you will be dearly missed… E

  142. Mary Clark

My deepest condolences to the family and close friends. You were one of the true ambassadors for the Royals and for Kansas City. If I could ever have my own field of dreams, you will surely be on my dream team. God bless you, Split.

  143. Terry White

Paul was such an inspiration to all of us Royal fans both as a pitcher, and as a broadcaster. But, what I really admired him the most for was his start broadcasting high school sports, and then advancing to college basketball. He was as insightful in those games, as he was in the Royals’ booth. A true master at his craft whether he was pitching or in a booth at a stadium or courtside. We will miss your knowledge and passion.

  144. Josh Taylor

Splitt, you were a true gentleman of the game. You taught so many of us the “in’s and out’s” of this wonderful pastime that we all love so much. To listen to your knowledge was a true pleasure and honor. Though we have lost a very special member of our Royals Family, heaven has gained a wonderful soul and it has been bettered by your presence. God bless you and keep you forever.

  145. Jon McClain

I was at opening day for the new Royals stadium in 1973 against the Texas Rangers and Paul was the starting pitcher. It was then the first game at the new Royals Stadium. Paul threw a great outing that day, we won going away 12 – 1. We will miss him. May God Bless you and your family.

  146. Stephanie Smith

I won a trip to New York City with the Royals many years ago. Dinner with Paul Splittorff was part of the prize package. After going to the day game on Saturday I came back to the hotel to find a message waiting. I called and Paul gave me the info as to where we were to have dinner. I was not looking forward to having dinner with a total stranger. We went to the Hyatt Grands fine restaurant and it was amazing! Paul was the sweetest, most easy going person. It was like going to dinner with a family member. We talked baseball for hours and the restaurant staff practically had to throw us out. It turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the trip. I will miss seeing you on Royals games Paul. Be sure to look up Dan(Quisenberry)
and Dick (Howser) because if there is baseball in heaven you will surely make the team.

  147. mike simpson

He will be missed by me and a lot of Royals fans. Its a hard loss for this organization and all of the fans. I remember as a young person all the kids try to copy his big leg kick and style of pitching. He was a hero and a great role model for me and my friends. Pro athletes should really study his life on how to conduct themselfs on and off the field. So sorry for this great loss. RIP Splitt

  148. Chris

I got to see Splitt through pretty much his whole playing career and watched his announcing career afterwards. He was a true professional in both. Got to know him some from him and his wife coming in to eat at V’s Restaurant where I work. He was an even better person.

God bless you, Paul. You will be missed. My prayers go out to your whole family.

  149. Wayne Sayre

My Sympathy to Paul`s Wife and Kids. May be the best ever for Kansas City. Certainly the best left hander. A lot of class. A slap in the Face, by Jim Frey in `80 World Series. Pitchers today can barely go 4 innings. Split and Leonard what a combination they were. Royals were great with their pitching and defense. The Royals should retire his #. Players today well it`s just not the same. My thoughts are with his Family and Kansas City has lost a great human being and Husband,Father, and role model for us all.

  150. Terri Jo

My heart goes out to Splitt’s family I will never forget such an amazing man. Thanks for staying loyal to KC. You will be missed by many.

  151. Phil Hudon

I saw many games that Splitt pitched and still cherish that day I waited in line for his autograph at a bank opening. I still have that baseball.

  152. Erik Burkhart

I wasn’t around when Paul was pitching, but he was fun to listen to during the Royals telecasts. I remember seeing him broadcast a Nebraska basketball game, I went by the booth before the game, I said “Hey Paul” and he said hello to me back. It wasn’t much, but something I won’t forget.

  153. Eric

Paul Splittorff was a great pitcher, excellent broadcaster and fantastic ambassador for both the Royals and Major League Baseball. He played the game with class, passion, integrity and tenacity. We’ve lost a great example of what a good person looks and acts like. I only met him once but, he was the consumate professional. God Bless his family, friends and co-workers during their time of sorrow & loss.

  154. Jillian

I became a Royals fan around the same time Splitt began his career. I enjoyed watching him pitch and years later, enjoyed his broadcasts. He has always had my respect and admiration. He will be missed.

  155. Diana

We loved watching Splitt pitch, and we enjoyed his broadcasts of the Royals games. I am sorry to hear that he has passed away. Prayers and condolences to his family.

  156. Steve Wirtz

Heaven has another lefty starter! Loved watching Paul play the game and do color for the Royals!!

  157. Bill Haag

My condolences to Paul’s family and friends. He will truly be missed. I had the pleasure of watching him play and listening to him on the broadcasts. RIP.

  158. Heather

You will be missed by all of the Royals fans!! You are the Royals!! I will miss your commentary during the Royals games. You were a class act and my heart goes out to your family. You left us to soon!!! God bless you and your family!! Love ya SPLITT God speed!!!

  159. Kris Ostdiek

This is so saddening! I grew up watching him pitch!! My thoughts and prayers are with the Splittorff family!

  160. DeShazo

My dad is gone now, but I do remember the good old days at the ballgames seeing you pitch, with him by my side!

  161. Judy & Doug Liese

Our deepest condolences to family and friends. He was a great man, for many reasons, and will be remembered always.

  162. Tyler

I am a young fan and never had the chance to watch him pitch. However I did get to listen to him broadcast the games for a few years and never once heard a bad thing come out of his mouth. He was well respected and it was easy to see why.

  163. Bob Jacobi

For an outstanding athlete and successful broadcaster, Paul Splittorf was amazingly humble and down-to-earth. My younger sister had a crush on him back when she was a teen and one night we were waiting for a restaurant table and there he was. We urged her to talk to him and finally one of us did. He was very gracious to my sister and it was hard to tell which one was more shy in the situation! We will miss him.

  164. Trent Green

Splittorff is a local legend. My first memory of him was when I was 6 years old. He came to our Elementary school in Ellinwood, KS. He actually took the time to play catch with several of us. He will be missed dearly!

  165. Dave Schwartz

I grew up listening to Denny call Splitt’s starts on the radio, then after he retired, I learned so much from his color analysis. Whether it was baseball or basketball he was announcing, you could always count on Splitt to give you the straight stuff. What a professional, a midwestern kid we are all proud of.

  166. Scott R

Our deepest thoughts, sympathy, and prayers to the Splittorff family. Paul came to Joplin with the Royals Caravan and was absolutely fantastic to visit with and to the fans. Not only do I remember the stories that he shared but I remember watching him pitch. He was and will always be A KANSAS CITY ROYAL!

  167. Kevin Williams

Many many great games, between watching you pitch and listening to your insight during the recent seasons as an announcer along with Frank and Ryan. You will be missed and never forgotten. You were a true PROFESSIONAL and we as fas couldnt have asked for better.

  168. Theresa Smith

You will be missed. God bless your family during this time. We’re praying for all of you.

  169. Matt Kruger

Splitt was a true-blue pillar of the community. Though KC has lost one of its greatest heroes, his memory and spirit will live on in our hearts. Love you, Splitt.

  170. josh bodenhamer

kansas city lost a great man today! But now him and Quiz are pitching for god. Thanks for the memories Splitt!

  171. Chaz Ruark

As one old enough to remember Paul’s great contribution to the Royals Glory Days I will always remember him fondly. His days as a broadcaster always brought back those cherished memories. Thanks so much Paul for all you have done for Kansas City.

  172. Scott

Thank you Paul Splittorff for being the best ambassador of my favorite baseball team all these years. “Split” you were a true blue Royal and will be greatly missed!

  173. Jesse Little

Paul, You will always be a champion in life. Thank you for your contributions to baseball and Kansas City. Thank you for your stewardship to the game. You once took a moment and asked my son about about baseball. You probably took that time with kids thousands of times and made each one feel special just like my son did. He felt connected to you because you noticed he was left handed as well. He would always say he was a lefty like “Splitty”. While we will miss you I know that God has called you and wanted to you start in tonight’s game… The Little Family Jesse, Kim, Kylie and Cameron

  174. Diane Ewing

Paul’s commentary on the Royal games was what moved me from being a casual baseball watcher into a “hate to miss a Royal’s game” fan. As TV shows became of less interest to me in the late 90’s early 2000’s, I started watching more and more of the Royals games from my home in Topeka. Because of Paul’s explanations of strategy and pitches, my interest in the game grew. I now sit in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota and subscribe to MLB.com so I can continue following my Royals. I always enjoyed listening to him and have missed him in the past couple of years. I never met him but he came across as a very good human being. My thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and all the Royal fans.

  175. sallie c from windsor mo.

My thoughts and prayers go out to splitts family. He was an awesome pitcher to watch. I remember his high leg lift before he threw the ball. He was fun and the Yankee killer.. I will miss. His charm, wit, and insightful input on the game. Go get em split at the great ballpark in the sky

  176. BS_Brendon

The high leg kick, hair coming out below is cap, and the glasses. No glamour, no pretention; he just brought it. Thanks for always bringing it, Splitt….

  177. Susan Smith

I have been a big fan of Paul Splittorff since the 70’s. this is a very sad loss. My condolences to his family and his teammates.

  178. Drew Kloeppel

We’ll sorely miss him…he was a true gentleman and incredible ambassador for the Royals. R.I.P.

  179. Clint Hazen

The Royals and all true baseball fans lost a great man. My sympathy goes out to his family and close friends. I grew up watching him and was a big fan and more recently enjoyed his insight to the game from the broadcast booth. R.I.P. Splitt. God Bless!!!

  180. Sandy A

I can’t say enough about how wonderful Splitt was to this fan. As a youngster in KC I remember watching him pitch and always knew KC could win it if Splitt was on the mound. As an adult, I met him at Spring Training as he was leaving after broadcasting a game. When I asked for his autograph, he said, “Are you sure? For an old guy like me?” and it wasn’t false humility. He laughed at the old baseball card I handed him and he even showed it to the KC TV broadcaster with him (Denny Trease?), joking about the big eyeglasses he wore at the time. Met him a couple more times afterward, and he was always friendly and happy to talk baseball with a fan. When I was able to get MLB out-of-market games, I enjoyed listening to his commentary – unlike a lot of ex-player broadcasters, he always brought something of interest to the game.

Splitt is one of the great Royals and #34 should be up there with Brett, White and Houser.

  181. Larry Luper

PRAYERS and condolensces to the Splittorff Family. Paul will be missed by fans, his fellow media memebers and others.

  182. andrew

RIP Paul Splitorff. You will be badly missed up in the booth. You was a gentleman and a schalor on and off the field. You wont be forgotton. Go Royals

  183. Matthew Blair

Paul my dear Friend may Gods presence ever be before you you will not be forgotten, for it wasn’t your talent they will remember, though phenomenal as it was, but rather your Spirit & sincerity they will always remember, ill see you someday dear friend, but until that day enjoy tossing the ball around with Dad.Love you Brother.RIP.

  184. Karen

    Goodbye Paul,
We will miss you so much. Your courage and strenghth is unbelievable. I am thankful you are at peace and your pain has ended. The Royals won’t be the same without your presence.

  185. Wanda Rains

WE are very sorry to hear about Paul. He was a wonderful commentator and we enjoyed listening to him. He is in a blessed place. My thoughts and prayers with the family.

  186. Doug

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE: Now pitching on the Field of Dreams, the ‘Big Left Hander’, #34, Paul Splittorff! May God bless you Paul. We will remember not only your on field heroics, but that you were a class act and a gentleman from start to finish. This team and this city will miss you.

  187. Tommy Brancato

My heart goes out to the Splittorff family. He was loved by many and will be miss as well.I have always enjoyed watching him on tv no matter if he was pitching or calling the game.We have lost a important part of the Royals family. He is in a better place now along with Dick Hoswer and many other great people.

  188. Kurt Johnsen

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Paul. I am reminded of when we lost the Quiz. Both were great men and great citizens of the KC area. They both left us way too soon. I will always remember the glory years when Paul pitched. He was fearless and awesome. I will miss him on the Royals broadcasts. My sincere sympathies to his family. The Stadium should be full the next home game to pay honor to him with a moment of silence.

  189. Chris

Sure are going to miss you Splitt! I can remember huddling around the radio with my grandpa, and listening to your broadcast. I enjoyed those times very much! To all his fans and family, God Bless!

  190. Chris Phillips

My heart goes out to Lynn, Jen, & Jaime. As a kid, always looked to Paul as a driving role model on how to play them game watching him play, and seeing him in town, as in Blue Springs Little League, many times had to play great Hi-Boy Teams that included, Jaime Splitorff and Dusty Wathan and the likes, to my adult years, calling Slow Pitch Softball games in Blue Springs, in which Jen has played many nights. Kansas City lost a great person today, which saddens the whole community!

My thoughts and prayers are with his family today. Paul was the heartbeat of Royals, since their inception, and forever apart of the city’s culture.

  191. Paul Gobea

I enjoyed his professioinalism in broadcasting. And always enjoyed him having success against the Yankees and especially Reggie Jackson in the playoffs.

  192. don mattonen

i remember buying mr spilttorfs card in the 80s i had his card and the entire royals team………i was young and play9ing baseball was my favorite thing to do…..i even went to texas to play. mr splittorf had that crazy pitch, and thats what made me wanna be a catcher. i heard paul say at a game one day that you cant be afraid of the ball. and i had to show everyone that i wasnt so i was team catcher for 5 years thanx paul!

  193. Austyn Hughes

Paul you will be greatly missed, your enthusiasm in the booth is what drew me back to the Royals and will always be missed.

One of my greatest memories as a kid was having the radio tuned into the Royals broadcast, listening to Splittorff pitch, and throwing a tennis ball against the side of my house pretending to be him. Prayers out to the entire Splittorff family. Although he has passed, who he was will live on in many of us.

As a kid growing up in rural Kansas I loved listening to the Royals on radio. Split was not only a great royal player and broadcaster he was also a great human being. You will be missed Split.

Guess God needed another pitcher for his team. HMMM … he needed a golfer so he took Seve, now he needs a pitcher to throw? WE are going to miss you Split! Thanks for all the years of hard work, pitching and broadcasting. THANK YOU!

I am too young to remember watching you play for the Royals but I can tell you I’ve listened to you do the play by play for the Royals for many years and I LOVED hearing you do it! You will be missed by many players, friends, family and especially the fans. RIP Splitt!!!

You were a great and kind man and you will always be a true Kansas City Royal. Thank you for all of your dedication and compassion in life and in the game of baseball.

WE are all saddened at his passing. I was a new listener – coming on in the Alex Gordon years only, but I was always impressed with Paul Splittdorf and he and Ryan made me laugh. I loved out he analyzed the pitching for us. I thought I knew a lot about pitching and I learned even more from him. He will be missed. Hopefully the Royals will post if a memorial of some kind will be done in his name.

Godspeed, Mr. Splittorff! You brought so much enjoyment to baseball while playing and broadcasting. So glad to meet you and talk with you this year on opening day. Prayers to all of your family.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Pauls passing. I was thrilled to meet Paul last summer at the K and get his autograph. My condolences to his family and the Royals organization.
