Royals fans remember Paul Splittorff
The Kansas City Royals organization mourns the passing of our all-time winningest pitcher and longtime team broadcaster, Paul Splittorff, at the age of 64 due to complications from melanoma. We invite our fans to share their memories and sentiments here in the comments below.
Splittorff spent his entire 15-year Major League Baseball career with the Royals and had a 166-143 record and 3.81 ERA in 429 regular-season games. The left-hander was in four postseasons with the Royals, 1976-77-78 and 1980, reaching the World Series in the latter year.
“Paul was a lifer as a Kansas City Royal, first as a stalwart on the field who became the winningest pitcher in franchise history and then transforming himself into an outstanding broadcaster,” Royals owner and CEO David Glass said. “We will not only miss the insight and humor that he injected into every telecast, but most importantly we will miss his friendship. He epitomized class and was always a great ambassador for the Kansas City Royals.”

When I was growing up in Milwaukee, I would alwayw remember those pesky Royals coming to town and always beating the Brewers! My favorite memory of Mr Splittorff, the broadcaster, was when they were promoting he bobblehead day give away and they put “little Splitty” on a treadmill in one of the gags. Paul and Ryan had a great laugh about little Splitty exercising on that treadmill. I will miss his great sense of humor in the broadcast booth.
I did not see Mr. Splittorff play but I have been a royals fan since i was born. I live in St. Peters and watch every royals game and the post game with Paul and it is sad to lose a familiar voice and face for me to see daily. This man lived and truely loved Royals baseball and the the great city of Kansas City. Royals nation lost an Icon, Legend, and a true ambassador or Royals baseball. The world was a better place with this great man in it.
One event the Royals used to do back in the 1970s was players would be on the field and you could go down and get your picture taken with them. I still have the picture of me taken with Paul Splitorff. It will truly be a cherished photo.
Splitt was my team’s coach at the first Royals Dream Week, and I came to know him even better when my radio station carried the Royals games. He was a damn good guy and one friendly, witty fellow.

So very saddened to hear about the loss of such a great man. As a child of the 70s, I grew up in the glory days, and Splitt was definitely one of my favorites. Never imagined while I was growing up that I would have the chance to meet and work with him, but as fate would have it, my career path (media relations in Mizzou Athletics) crossed with Splitt’s broadcasting career. He was one of the first “big-time” athletes I ever met, and he was just a regular guy – you’d never know of his celebrity because he never acted like one. Just the most down-to-earth man and among the most genuinely nice and warm people I’ve ever met. I treasure the memory of having a chance to play a round of golf with him some 7-8 years ago, and I had a blast playing with him, even though he kicked my tail all over the course.
My prayers go out to the Splittorff family and to the entire Royals family. We lost a great person, but we were definitely better off for having him with us for too short of a time.

I will certainly miss Paul and his insight and details as he called the game. We watch every Royals games and we always enjoyed Splitts analysis and ability to make it all sound so easy. I grew up watching Splitt pitch and was always amazed how with that high leg kick he didn’t get tired after 2 innings! He and his wife used to bowl with my mother and father in law and they always enjoyed talking the game with him. He will be greatly missed and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Like many younger fans, I only remember Paul as a broadcaster, not as a player. I grew up watching the Royals on TV and enjoyed listening to Paul night after night on the broadcasts. I feel as if I have lost a member of my family, as his voice was always in my home during baseball season.

Paul Splittorff was one of the many Royals I remember so well growing up…one of my favorite pitchers. I gained even more respect for Splitt in the broadcast booth…he had incredible insight of the game of baseball. I’m going to miss him in the booth.
Paul Splittorff’s was the first autograph I ever got. I was 7-8ish, late 70’s, at Phil Welch Stadium in St Joseph, MO. He signed a ball for me and I have never forgotten that night. I still have the ball, with more Royals great autographs, and have handed it down to my 9 yro son. I have educated him on the great Royals of my childhood and he has come to appreciate them as I did. Everytime we saw Splitt at the K or Fan Fest I would always point him out. I ran into Splitt last year at the K after he had returned from being out battling cancer. I shook his hand and told him how great it was to see him back. At Fan Fest ’10, I got his autograph again and told him about him being the first one I ever got when I was a kid. I will miss seeing him at the K and on the post-games. He was truely a Royal and did so much for the team and town. There are very few like Splitt in the game today. I’m glad I have gotten to meet him over the years and seen him play in his hayday. RIP Splitt!
I grew up in Blue Springs & played softball with his daughter. During the strike year he came to a lot of games. I got some hitting advice from him and he signed my glove; something I will never forget. He was a very kind man and he will be missed.

I have many memories of watching Paul bringing it on the mound as a young girl. He was one of the few Royals pitching greats. And I have recent memories of watching him in the pre-game show at Rival’s Sports Bar at Kauffman. The most recent time was 5/6/11. I had no idea that day that he would be gone 19 days later. Rest in peace. You will be sadly missed.

So many memories of a true gentleman who happened to play baseball for my favorite team. Yes, he was a great pitcher and holds some major Royals team records, but his love and respect for the game surpass those things. I had the chance to meet him several times… he’d sign some baseball cards and talk baseball with those of us fans who surrounded him. It didn’t get any better than that! I also enjoyed him in his distinguished broadcasting career… his memories, his insights, his frank opinions, his conversations with fellow broadcasters in the booth — all added so much to my enjoyment of the games he was doing regardless of what sport/season. The sports world has lost a great role model.. the world has lost a great human being. Thank you, Paul.

I grew up less than 4 miles from Roylas Stadium and me and my brother use to ride our bikes to almost all the games for the $2.00 GA seats. I grew up watching the Royals and Paul Splitorff. I am still watching the Royals now and will continue to watch them always. Paul was a wonderful pitcher as well as a commentator. He will be missed and his family is in our prayers.
I remember my first time I went to Royals Stadium as a kid. Paul pitched the game that day and didn’t win the game. I watched as he stood on the mound after the game disappointed. After awhile he headed to the dugout, saw me standing there and threw me the ball with a big smile. Many years later I got him to sign it and thanked him for making me a Royal’s fan. I grew up in KC during the 70’s and 80’s and spent many summer days listening to the Royals on radio, or waiting in line for General Admission tickets on sweltering July afternoons. I’ll always remember trying to emulate Splittorff’s high leg kick and delivery (even though I wasn’t left handed!). He was one of the first Royal celebrities I’ll ever remember–before George Brett, Dennis Leonard, Willie Wilson and Bo Jackson. May his family treasure his memory and the Royal nation honor his steady, consistent, and selfless contribution to it’s storied history.

My daughter, wife and I were at Fan Fest a couple of years ago. Paul was signing autographs and my wife happened to be in his line and got his autograph. Not being the biggest baseball fan in the world, she wasn’t aware of his baseball and broadcasting exploits. However, she was still excited about her encounter. “I just met the nicest man. His eyes radiated kindness.” I can only wish that we all were able to make such an impression in a few seconds.

I got Split’s autograph many many years ago when I was 13 and will never forget how personable he is. He will be missed for his athletic prowness and for his class……..a sad day in KC indeed.
I grew up watching Splitt as a player and then as a broadcaster for the Royals and Jayhawks. The world has lost a truly unique and unforgettable person. He personified the heart and soul of the Kansas City Royals. We”ll miss you !!!!!!!!

I was lucky to have met Paul a couple of times and he was a true gentleman. He was important in the development of those great teams of the 70’s. Did a great job broadcasting as well. He will really be missed by all Royals fans.
Splitt will never be forgotten in the sports world, especially all of us KC Royals fan. I have enjoyed watching Splitt since the first time he ever pitched in a Royals uniform and later in the booth and at basketball games . He was always so laid back and made no negetative remarks about anything, not even umpires or referee’s when he sure could of. Thoughts and prayers to his family to help them thru these super sad days. Keep all memories in your heart and mind and God will get thur it all.
I have been a Royals fan for over 40 years and I am saden by the passing of paul.He was great pitcher and goes to show that you don’t have throw 100 mile an hour fast ball.

First of all and foremost is that my prayers are with Paul’s family and the Kansas City Royals today and the coming weeks. I got to meet Paul Splitorff right after he started with the Royals at an autograph session the Royals had and he was very kind to me as a kid. He seemed such a gentle soul. It is very sad to loose this kind of spirit at his age and he will be missed. I enjoyed watching him pitch and listen to his commentary when he became a broadcaster for the Royals. He was my favorite pitcher.
So sad to lose such a class act. My condolences to Paul’s family and friends. I’m grateful he was such a wonderful presence in our city.

As a life long royals fan I am deeply saddened today. I remember Spiltts accomplishments on the field and in the press box, as he excelled in both places. Tons of fond memories of the Royals revolve around Paul Spilttorff. The Splitorff family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Selfishly, I hate the fact that I’m not going to be able to hear you’re incredible insightfulness moving forward. To me, you’re the best TV color man in Royals history, you carried the show with Bob, and you and Ryan were a great fit. Paul Spilttorff was a class act on and off the ball field, and I hope he realized how much Kansas City loved him.
I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s, so I don’t remember a lot about his days as a pitcher. But, he will always be one of my favorites because of his humility, respect for others, and professionalism as a broadcaster. I can’t ever recall hearing him make a negative statement about someone else. He was relentlessly positive about the Royals and the organization. His time here was way too short…

I’ve been a Royals fan since those great early 70’s teams. The highlight of my baseball life was going to the first “Batting Practice at the K” and getting into the cage with Splitt on the mound. Even though he must have been almost 60 years old then, it was intimidating to have this large man throwing at me from the left side! He was truly a class act, and baseball, particularly fans of the Royals, will miss him.
Fond memories watching Splitt pitch many times over the years. Will never forget the playoff wins against Yankees. A real Royals treasure. He will be missed.

As a Royals fan from the days of 22nd and Brooklyn in 1969, Split was one of the stars of the early Royals, along with Lou Piniella, Amos Otis and Fred Patek. Another piece of my childhood gone with him.

We made one trip a season to see the Royals.Splitt was always pitching when we went.He became my favorite Royals pitcher and soon my favorite Royal period.I am saddened by the news of his passing.He will be missed.And the organization needs to retire his number.Should’ve been done a long time ago.RIP Splitt.
Memory:
Back when we were kids, during some serious back yard wiffle ball games we used to try to mimic many of the major league pitcher’s wind-ups and sometimes we’d play “Name That Pitcher?”. There were so many memorable distinct pitching styles back then, such as Luis Tiant and his 180 degree twist, Mark “The Bird” Fydrich talking to the ball, Al Hrabosky “The Mad Hungarian” stepping to the back of the mound and then slamming the ball into his glove only to then serve up a fat meat ball, but truly everyone always new the crafty lefty “Split”, with his super high leg kick and then his arms and legs all in sync and then the squared away follow through. All business on the mound and “The Yankee Killer”.
Split, you were all class and you will be deeply missed.

I’ve been following Paul since his earliest days in the Royals organization, and can’t remember a classier gentleman in the game of baseball. Heaven has gained a wonderful soul. RIP Splitt!
We know who is pitching in heaven today. God could not of chosen a better person then “Splitty” to be on his team.
As a kid, I tried to emulate Splitt’s high leg-kick, even though I was right-handed. Looking back, there aren’t very many people more worthy of being imitated. I’ll miss you, Splitt.
He was truely a class act. He was the working class of baseball. He wasn’t blessed with a 100 mph fastball, or a curve ball that “falls off the table” but he knew how to use what he had, and made himself the best pitcher in Royals history. He was also one of the few people who played their entire career with the Royals, and followed that, taking the same hard work ethic to the booth. People like Splittorff, George Brett, and Frank White don’t come around very often. Also, how many other Royals pitchers can be nicknamed the “Yankee Killer”?? His records will probably never be broken. He will be GREATLY missed. Rest in peace Mr. Splittorff…

Tears have continued to flow since hearing of Splitt’s death and in reading the tributes by his many many fans. To be heaven, it will have to have baseball, and I will be watching him pitch once again. He was a great person and Kansas City will mourn him. My prayers are with his family, friends, co-workers and fans.
I have been a KC fan for 53 years – first the A’s, then the Royals. Splitt was always a favorite of mine. We were the same age and both played small college ball. I have always enjoyed him as an announcer as well. Felt bad for him this year; one could tell he wasn’t well. If there is any positive in his passing, it is that he didn’t have to suffer more.
Paul gave us many thrills as a Royal, always in an understated manner. He applied the same manner to his broadcast comments both for baseball and basketball.
I really respected him and I will miss him.
When I was in 8th grade the Royals Caravan came through Fort Scott while I was in school so I was unable to attend. My dad took off from work that day and went down there to get autographs for me. While he was there, Splitt got into a conversation with him. As my dad tells the story, they spoke for several minutes and Splitt was talking to him just like they had been friends for many years. From this story and from so many other stories I’ve heard today, this is typical how kind of a person Paul Splittorff was. The Royals broadcasts will not be the same without Splitt and Royals nation in general will not be the same. The family is in my thoughts and prayers. That’s a great father/husband you had there.

Paul was such an inspiration to all of us Royal fans both as a pitcher, and as a broadcaster. But, what I really admired him the most for was his start broadcasting high school sports, and then advancing to college basketball. He was as insightful in those games, as he was in the Royals’ booth. A true master at his craft whether he was pitching or in a booth at a stadium or courtside. We will miss your knowledge and passion.
Splitt, you were a true gentleman of the game. You taught so many of us the “in’s and out’s” of this wonderful pastime that we all love so much. To listen to your knowledge was a true pleasure and honor. Though we have lost a very special member of our Royals Family, heaven has gained a wonderful soul and it has been bettered by your presence. God bless you and keep you forever.
I was at opening day for the new Royals stadium in 1973 against the Texas Rangers and Paul was the starting pitcher. It was then the first game at the new Royals Stadium. Paul threw a great outing that day, we won going away 12 – 1. We will miss him. May God Bless you and your family.
I won a trip to New York City with the Royals many years ago. Dinner with Paul Splittorff was part of the prize package. After going to the day game on Saturday I came back to the hotel to find a message waiting. I called and Paul gave me the info as to where we were to have dinner. I was not looking forward to having dinner with a total stranger. We went to the Hyatt Grands fine restaurant and it was amazing! Paul was the sweetest, most easy going person. It was like going to dinner with a family member. We talked baseball for hours and the restaurant staff practically had to throw us out. It turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the trip. I will miss seeing you on Royals games Paul. Be sure to look up Dan(Quisenberry)
and Dick (Howser) because if there is baseball in heaven you will surely make the team.
He will be missed by me and a lot of Royals fans. Its a hard loss for this organization and all of the fans. I remember as a young person all the kids try to copy his big leg kick and style of pitching. He was a hero and a great role model for me and my friends. Pro athletes should really study his life on how to conduct themselfs on and off the field. So sorry for this great loss. RIP Splitt
I got to see Splitt through pretty much his whole playing career and watched his announcing career afterwards. He was a true professional in both. Got to know him some from him and his wife coming in to eat at V’s Restaurant where I work. He was an even better person.

My Sympathy to Paul`s Wife and Kids. May be the best ever for Kansas City. Certainly the best left hander. A lot of class. A slap in the Face, by Jim Frey in `80 World Series. Pitchers today can barely go 4 innings. Split and Leonard what a combination they were. Royals were great with their pitching and defense. The Royals should retire his #. Players today well it`s just not the same. My thoughts are with his Family and Kansas City has lost a great human being and Husband,Father, and role model for us all.

I saw many games that Splitt pitched and still cherish that day I waited in line for his autograph at a bank opening. I still have that baseball.
I wasn’t around when Paul was pitching, but he was fun to listen to during the Royals telecasts. I remember seeing him broadcast a Nebraska basketball game, I went by the booth before the game, I said “Hey Paul” and he said hello to me back. It wasn’t much, but something I won’t forget.
Paul Splittorff was a great pitcher, excellent broadcaster and fantastic ambassador for both the Royals and Major League Baseball. He played the game with class, passion, integrity and tenacity. We’ve lost a great example of what a good person looks and acts like. I only met him once but, he was the consumate professional. God Bless his family, friends and co-workers during their time of sorrow & loss.
I became a Royals fan around the same time Splitt began his career. I enjoyed watching him pitch and years later, enjoyed his broadcasts. He has always had my respect and admiration. He will be missed.

I am a young fan and never had the chance to watch him pitch. However I did get to listen to him broadcast the games for a few years and never once heard a bad thing come out of his mouth. He was well respected and it was easy to see why.

For an outstanding athlete and successful broadcaster, Paul Splittorf was amazingly humble and down-to-earth. My younger sister had a crush on him back when she was a teen and one night we were waiting for a restaurant table and there he was. We urged her to talk to him and finally one of us did. He was very gracious to my sister and it was hard to tell which one was more shy in the situation! We will miss him.
Splittorff is a local legend. My first memory of him was when I was 6 years old. He came to our Elementary school in Ellinwood, KS. He actually took the time to play catch with several of us. He will be missed dearly!
I grew up listening to Denny call Splitt’s starts on the radio, then after he retired, I learned so much from his color analysis. Whether it was baseball or basketball he was announcing, you could always count on Splitt to give you the straight stuff. What a professional, a midwestern kid we are all proud of.

Paul’s commentary on the Royal games was what moved me from being a casual baseball watcher into a “hate to miss a Royal’s game” fan. As TV shows became of less interest to me in the late 90’s early 2000’s, I started watching more and more of the Royals games from my home in Topeka. Because of Paul’s explanations of strategy and pitches, my interest in the game grew. I now sit in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota and subscribe to MLB.com so I can continue following my Royals. I always enjoyed listening to him and have missed him in the past couple of years. I never met him but he came across as a very good human being. My thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and all the Royal fans.

I can’t say enough about how wonderful Splitt was to this fan. As a youngster in KC I remember watching him pitch and always knew KC could win it if Splitt was on the mound. As an adult, I met him at Spring Training as he was leaving after broadcasting a game. When I asked for his autograph, he said, “Are you sure? For an old guy like me?” and it wasn’t false humility. He laughed at the old baseball card I handed him and he even showed it to the KC TV broadcaster with him (Denny Trease?), joking about the big eyeglasses he wore at the time. Met him a couple more times afterward, and he was always friendly and happy to talk baseball with a fan. When I was able to get MLB out-of-market games, I enjoyed listening to his commentary – unlike a lot of ex-player broadcasters, he always brought something of interest to the game.
Splitt is one of the great Royals and #34 should be up there with Brett, White and Houser.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Paul. I am reminded of when we lost the Quiz. Both were great men and great citizens of the KC area. They both left us way too soon. As a kid, always looked to Paul as a driving role model on how to play them game watching him play, and seeing him in town, as in Blue Springs Little League, many times had to play great Hi-Boy Teams that included, Jaime Splitorff and Dusty Wathan and the likes, to my adult years, calling Slow Pitch Softball games in Blue Springs, in which Jen has played many nights. Kansas City lost a great person today, which saddens the whole community!

i remember buying mr spilttorfs card in the 80s i had his card and the entire royals team………i was young and play9ing baseball was my favorite thing to do…..i even went to texas to play. mr splittorf had that crazy pitch, and thats what made me wanna be a catcher. i heard paul say at a game one day that you cant be afraid of the ball. and i had to show everyone that i wasnt so i was team catcher for 5 years thanx paul!
Paul you will be greatly missed, your enthusiasm in the booth is what drew me back to the Royals and will always be missed.

One of my greatest memories as a kid was having the radio tuned into the Royals broadcast, listening to Splittorff pitch, and throwing a tennis ball against the side of my house pretending to be him. Prayers out to the entire Splittorff family. Although he has passed, who he was will live on in many of us.
As a kid growing up in rural Kansas I loved listening to the Royals on radio. Split was not only a great royal player and broadcaster he was also a great human being. You will be missed Split.
Guess God needed another pitcher for his team. HMMM … he needed a golfer so he took Seve, now he needs a pitcher to throw? WE are going to miss you Split! Thanks for all the years of hard work, pitching and broadcasting. THANK YOU!

I am too young to remember watching you play for the Royals but I can tell you I’ve listened to you do the play by play for the Royals for many years and I LOVED hearing you do it! You will be missed by many players, friends, family and especially the fans. RIP Splitt!!!

WE are all saddened at his passing. I was a new listener – coming on in the Alex Gordon years only, but I was always impressed with Paul Splittdorf and he and Ryan made me laugh. I loved out he analyzed the pitching for us. I thought I knew a lot about pitching and I learned even more from him. He will be missed. Hopefully the Royals will post if a memorial of some kind will be done in his name.
Godspeed, Mr. Splittorff! You brought so much enjoyment to baseball while playing and broadcasting. So glad to meet you and talk with you this year on opening day. Prayers to all of your family.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Pauls passing. I was thrilled to meet Paul last summer at the K and get his autograph. My condolences to his family and the Royals organization.
